Never in Punjab's history has a rape and murder case taken on the dimensions of such a strong and sustained people's movement, making Kiranjit Kaur an icon of struggle against repression for the region's people. There were many occasions when gatherings of over 50,000 people converged on the lethargic police set-up into action. When Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal expressed his wish to visit the victim's family in September 1997, the activists handed him a list of people they did not want to see. These included the local Akali M.L.A., and SGPC leader and several Akali leader. And the CM agreed.
